Bangkok market: Experiencing
traditional and modern shopping
In the days long before supermarkets
and shopping
malls ever existed, Bangkok people
would go shopping in open-air markets and
shop houses. Since there were
no one stop shopping places,
people in those days had to shop
from one market to another.
Thus, shopping could last a whole
day to get everything in need.
Since the boom of the one stop
shopping malls in the 80's, many
shop houses and open-air markets could not withstand the
change and
began to shut down.
Fortunately, some markets still survive
(though
less busy than in their glory days)
and you can explore them to trace
back Bangkok's living past.
Most of them are in old
Bangkok and Chinatown,
your places to see the "good old
days" markets. Many
markets I listed here are the big names,
some are from the past before the
60's while some are the newcomers
since the 80's. Old or new,
they're all are popular hot
spots.
Note: Old markets before the
60's are marked with *.
