Khao San road: Nightlife & the world's hub of backpackers

If you think old Bangkok is conservatively packed with temples and palaces without any nightlife, you better think twice.  There's nightlife in old Bangkok and it's a place visited by Leonardo Di Caprio in the movie "The Beach."  The place is Khao San road.

Khao San road is the hub of old Bangkok's nightlife.  It is rated as one of the world's top backpackers' destinations, a base where the backpackers plan their travel in Thailand, Southeast Asia, and Indochina.  Khao San Road is bordered by cheap guesthouses and hotels.  It's the budget travelers' heaven.

The road was once a rice market and so was named in Thai meaning "the rice road."  Back in the olden days, Khao San road was an accommodation spot for non-Bangkok Thais upon their visit to the capital.  Many of them were civil servants because most government offices at that time were centered in old Bangkok.

Today, Khao San road leaves no trace of its past.  It has become a busy nightlife stuffed with chick pubs, fusion restaurants, guesthouses, travel agents, street vendors, etc.  Thais are here mainly to party after sunset, enjoy a classy dinner, shop on the street, and celebrate the yearly Songkran water festival.

Khao San road is the place to discover that old Bangkok may look so conservative during the day but totally not so during the night.

Hours: Recommended 8-11 pm, daily

Review
Over the years, Khao San road has branched out to Soi Rambuttri (An alley across the Khao San road next to Wat Chana Songkram temple.)  Therefore, your visit here should cover Soi Rambuttri as well.

+ Khao San road is your place for budget accommodations and making new friends from around the world.
+ With countless travel agencies, you can plan your travel in Thailand and Southeast Asia. (And that's how backpackers from around the world do.)  You can get and share travel information in this region with new friends and even find a travel companion here.

- Khao San road is busiest after dark.  The road (including Soi Rambuttri) is closed and becomes a shopping street bordered by noisy pubs and restaurants.  If you're not a party person or prefer a quiet and peaceful night, Khao San road may not be for you nor for any travelers with children either.

Note: If you stay in new Bangkok, you can also enjoy nightlife like Khao San road in Patpong. (Though it may be wilder with numerous go-go bars and the red light district.)

Khao San road is ideal for
-Travelers wishing to stay near historical sites (e.g. The Grand -Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Arun, Wat Po, etc.) 5/5
-Travlers looking for budget accommodations 5/5
-Travelers looking for a traveling friend 5/5
- Travelers planning for a Southeast Asia trip 5/5
-Backpackers 5/5
-Nightlife people 4/5

Pra Arthit road, 10 minutes walk from the lively Khao San road, caters people looking for more peaceful and quieter pubs.  khao-san-road
